Conservation Tillage: Cover Crops

Winter Wheat

Photo: Winter WheatWinter wheat is a wintertime annual grass. It grows tall and can produce a great amount of dry matter. It is often used as living mulch. It is not particularly good at pest control or fixing nitrogen, but contains alleopathic tendencies and good at controlling soil erosion. Wheat roots spread quickly to scavenge nutrients and will decompose to increase soil quality through organic matter.

Seed 1-2 bu*/A. October 5 through early November. (*bu = bushel; 1 bu = 60 lb)
