Intranet: Campuses: Tifton

Utility expenditures on the UGA Tifton Campus continue to be a major portion of our operating budget. However progress is being made on managing those costs. For the last fiscal year, ending June 30 of this year, utility costs for the campus were reduced by 1%, and for the Conference Center were reduced by 17%. This was in spite of an 8.1% increase in the cost of electricity. So through all your efforts and some financial expenditures targeted at reducing energy usage the campus has made good progress. For the first two months of this fiscal year utilities for the campus were up by 2% over the same period last year, while the Conference Center utility use was down by 33%. Major gains at the Conference Center have been accomplished because of the discovery of a major flaw in the system operating software there. I applaud your efforts and ask that you continue to be energy conscious in your work environment.

Major repair and renovation (MRR) funds have been awarded for the current fiscal year. In addition to the normal MRR funds that UGA receives, the CAES is also receiving additional bond funds to support farm infrastructure improvements. You will continue to see improvements here on campus and at our research and education centers statewide. The infusion of these funds helps to address maintenance issues campus wide, including buildings on farms, HVAC issues in buildings, energy efficiency projects and other upgrades. These funds are crucial to our campus and farms and have a very positive impact. If you happen to be speaking with one of our state legislators, please thank them for their support.

Senator Johnny Isakson held a town hall meeting at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center on Friday, August 24. Town hall meeting with Senator Johnny IsaksonThere was good attendance and after opening remarks, Senator Isakson took questions from the audience. We are fortunate to be represented by people like Senator Isakson who shared a wealth of information on a wide variety of topics. Overall it was a very good meeting and a good opportunity for the UGA Tifton Campus.

The CAES Strategic Plan was rolled out at a meeting at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center on August 28. Dean Angle provided opening remarks to begin the meeting and a summary of the plan was provided by Dr. Laura Perry Johnson and Dr. Jean Bertrand. The next step is to develop implementation teams for the different action items.
