TUGA Times

August 22, 2011

The Southeast Bioenergy Conference was held September 9-11 at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center. This was the 6th year for this outstanding conference. NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace was the lead-off speaker for the conference. The conference had several panel discussions, break-out sessions and exhibitors, and was a great success, with over 350 in attendance. Some photos of the conference can be viewed by clicking the slideshow link below.

In addition a public forum on Tifton's Energy Future was held on Monday evening prior to the start of the Bioenergy Conference. This forum focused on challenges and opportunities facing local businesses and organizations, and panels discussed energy issues facing businesses, agriculture, and academic institutions. Thanks to Craig Kvien, Kim Cutchins, the conference committee, and the many volunteers who worked to make the conference a success.

The Southeast Research and Education Center Field Day was held on Tuesday, August 16th at Midville. This was the fourth field day held at Midville since Dean Angle announced the reopening of the SEREC in 2007. This year may have brought record attendance, as a large group of farmers and industry personnel learned about the many research projects being conducted there. As usual the UGA Tifton Campus was well represented, and all scientists did a great job sharing the on-going research being conducted there. CAES administration was well represented, as Dean Angle, Bob Shulstad, Steve Brown, and I were in attendance. A mix of research and extension scientists and extension agents made the day very informative. Some pictures of the field day are attached. Despite the dry year the crops and the farm looked great. Thanks to Superintendent Anthony Black and his able staff for putting on a very successful field day.
