Southeast Bioenergy Conference:

The 5th annual SE Bioenergy Conference was held August 3-5 at the Tifton Campus Conference Center. The conference continues to grow and has become an outstanding event. This year's registration topped 500 people (up 23% over last year), twenty-six states were represented, as well as several other countries. The program was very good and stimulated a lot of interest among participants. In addition, Congressman Jack Kingston, Congressman Sanford Bishop, and Governor Sonny Perdue attended and addressed attendees. The organizing committee and volunteers did another great job.

USDA Bioenergy Field Day:

The USDA Bioenergy Field Day was held on Friday August 6 at the Tifton Campus. A number of stakeholders, members of the Georgia General Assembly, and liaisons for Congressmen were in attendance. In addition, Dr. Debra Brennan, area director, and Dr. Roy Scott, national program leader, for USDA-ARS were in attendance. USDA-ARS scientists presented research being conducted here in Tifton on bioenergy crops and updates on future plans. It was a very good day, and helped to demonstrate the breadth of work being conducted in Tifton in the area of renewable energy.

Awards and Recognitions:

Dr. Stanley Culpepper (Crop & Soil Science Department) was recently recognized in Georgia Trend magazine as one of the Agribusiness: Movers & Shakers for Georgia. This is a prestigious and accomplished group of people and we congratulate Dr. Culpepper for this honor.

Ms. Karen McBrayer (UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center) was recently recognized in ConventionSouth Magazine for Top Service from Top Employees. This is a well-deserved recognition of Karen's service and dedication. Congratulations!

Blood Drive:

The next blood drive is coming up next Tuesday, the 17th of August, 12pm to 6pm at the Tifton Methodist Church. As was the July blood drive, this one is again sponsored by the UGA Tifton campus which includes the folks from UGA, USDA, and the Vet Diagnostic lab. We are again having a drawing with a winning participant getting a $50 WalMart gift card and a "blood drop" containing a number of little gifts from past donor appreciation hand-outs. Some of these are quite nice. Now to wet your interest, your chance to win could be as little as 1 out of 10. We have had in the past as few as 10 donors from our campus. WE NEED MORE. I am hoping that it will be 1 out of 25 or so. No matter if it is 1 out of 10 or 25, your chance for winning is still better than any drawing that I have ever heard of. Most are 1 out of thousands or more. You have a real chance to win. More importantly you have a chance to do a very good deed and give the gift of life. The blood supply is low during this time of year; we really need more volunteers. I have personally talked to several folks on campus that are planning to give blood but haven't lately. WAY TO GO!!! Thanks for your help!
