Recognition of Garrett Hortman:

Garrett Hortman, who is a student worker for Dr. Gary Hawkins of the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department, was recognized as one of the top 100 student employees (out of over 4000 students at UGA) selected this year. On April 14, he attended the Student Employee of the Year Award Luncheon in Athens. Garrett and the other 99 student employees of the year were honored will all receive a certificate. Garrett is a student in the UGA Tifton Campus Agriscience and Environmental Systems major and will graduate in May. Congratulations Garrett!

Chamber of Commerce Emerging Leaders Institute:

I had the opportunity to participate in an educational panel discussion with the Emerging Leaders Institute on Monday of this week, which is sponsored by the Tifton Tift County Chamber of Commerce. The educational panel consisted of David Bridges (ABAC), Tina Anderson (Moultrie Tech), Patrick Atwater (Tift County Schools), and me representing UGA. We had a wide-ranging discussion covering many aspects of education and society. The institute participants are young adults who are active in the community. They were an impressive, bright group of individuals and it was a thought provoking evening. Two of the institute members come from our USDA-ARS partners here on the Tifton Campus.

MR&R Committee in Tifton:

Members of the UGA MRR Committee (major repair and renovation) were in Tifton to tour our campus on Thursday. This important committee helps to make decisions as to where to direct MRR funding. Bruce Shiver and I toured the committee through completed MRR projects and had the opportunity to show them a large number of the needs on this campus. This was an important visit and I am appreciative of the time that the committee spent here. The members of the committee included Sean Rogers, Director of Capital Budgeting, Kathy Pharr, Assistant Vice President, Office of the Senior VP for Finance & Administration, and Clayton Wilcox from the Office of University Architects. It was a productive visit and should help in the future as we work to improve the campus.

The competition is on! $1.00 tickets are now being sold for the Relay For Life Basket fundraiser.
