UGA Tifton Campus Educational Summit:

As I reported in our last TUGA Times edition, the Tifton Campus Educational Summit that was held at the Tifton Campus Conference Center last Friday was a great success. A diverse group of over 50 people came together to hear the final report of the study by Kay Zimmerman and to plan a direction for the program. We have had some excellent media opportunities since then. Below find a link to the Tifton Gazette for a newspaper article on the event. In addition, I had the opportunity to be interviewed on WTIF by Chris Beckham, and the Georgia Farm Bureau's Farm Monitor TV show was here filming on Thursday, highlighting our students and conducting interviews. These media opportunities, both local and statewide, will increase visibility of our academic programs and help identify students for our future. Thanks to Brad Haire for coordinating the media contacts.

FFA Social:

I attended a social on Thursday evening for the Tift Co. High School FFA Chapter. Hosted by UGA, Dr. Jason Peake and the UGA Tifton Campus Collegiate FFA Chapter cooked and entertained a large group of students. This is an excellent opportunity to inform local students about educational opportunities here on the Tifton Campus. Thanks to Dr. Peake and members of the Tifton Campus Collegiate FFA Chapter for hosting the group.

Safety Week:

The UGA Tifton Campus held the annual Safety Week seminars this week. A broad array of seminars on health, safety, stress relief, pesticide handling, and other issues were covered. This is an excellent opportunity to make the workplace safer and more healthy for all our staff and faculty, and I hope everyone took the opportunity to participate. A special word of thanks to Stan Diffie for the hard work he puts in coordinating this important event.

Student recognition:

Mr. Dylan Wann competed in the Graduate Student Oral Presentations competition at the 2010 Southern Regional Branch American Society of Agronomy Meetings (part of the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists) in Orlando on Feb. 8. He went head-to-head with M.S. and Ph.D. students from other southeastern region Universities (covering from Kentucky south and from Texas east), and took home first place. It was his first time competing as a graduate student. Dylan is studying under the direction of Dr. Scott Tubbs. Congratulations Dylan!
