UGA Tifton Campus Educational Summit:

The UGA Tifton Campus Educational Summit was held today at the Tifton Campus Conference Center. Over 50 people came together to hear the final report of the study by Kay Zimmerman regarding opportunities for the academic programs here on our campus. A diverse group of people participated, including faculty from Tifton and Griffin, department heads, members of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs office in Athens, Tifton community members, representatives from partner institutions, and current and former students. Several key points were discussed in break-out groups to identify priorities and develop a road map for the future of the teaching program here. Participants left the meeting with a positive impression about the future of teaching here at the Tifton Campus.

Southern Federation of Cooperatives:

The Southern Federation of Cooperatives met in Albany last weekend. I had the opportunity to address the group regarding programs on the UGA Tifton Campus on Saturday. Also on the program was Congressman Sanford Bishop and Hobby Stripling, executive director of USDA's Farm Service Agency in Georgia.

Friendly Request from the UGA TCCC:

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve your meeting and conference needs. The meetings held here help our local hotels, restaurants and other businesses. It would be a great help to the TCCC, if you would take a minute before you leave your meeting/conference to complete the gold Survey Card that is left in your meeting room. This information helps us to keep accurate records and give us the information needed to report to the Tourism Association, the Development Authority, the Commissioners and the City Manager's Office.

Safety Week:

The 2010 Tifton Campus Safety and Health Week will be held February 23-25 at the Tifton Campus Conference Center. All sessions will be held in Room 19 of the conference center. Attached is a description of all 12 sessions along with the time and date for each. All UGA employees should register for and attend at least one session. The website is:
http://www.ugatiftonconference.org

Please take a look at the session descriptions, then select one or more of the sessions you would like to attend. Below the descriptions you will find registration instructions--this is a NEW registration system for most of us. Everyone must set up an account to register, and it only takes a few minutes to set up the account. The instructions should lead you through the process without any problems. However, if you do experience problems registering, please call the conference office at 386-3416.

Please make sure everyone in your department receives this information and has access to a computer in order to register.

ALSO, Gas Cylinder Safety and Handling has been added to Safety Week. It will be on Thursday, Feb 25, 2010 from 3:30-5:00 and presented by Mack McGraw, Airgas Corp. "Safe Use and Handling of Compressed Gases and Cryogenic Liquids; Hazards of Gases" will encompass properties of gases; compatible materials for gas handling equipment such as regulators; valves; etc. IF YOU USE OR HANDLE COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDERS, IT IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED THAT YOU ATTEND THIS CLASS. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IT HAS BEEN OFFERED AT SAFETY WEEK AND WILL PROVIDE EXTREMELY VALUABLE INFORMATION THAT IS CRITICAL TO YOUR HEALTH AND SAFETY.

GIFT and Young Scholars Programs:

Wanted: UGA & USDA faculty to provide science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) experiences for K-12 teachers and high school students for 4-7 weeks during the summer.

We have two programs on our Tifton Campus designed to facilitate these internships – The Ga. Intern-Fellowships for Teachers (GIFT) Program is a partnership between the University of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology to provide classroom teachers with “real life” experiences to transform teaching and learning in the STEM areas, and Young Scholars provides these experiences for high school students.

To learn more about GIFT and Young Scholars come to an Information Session:

When: Thursday, February 25 — 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Where: NESPAL Building Seminar Room

NOTE: GIFT qualifies as a RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR TEACHERS (RET) at NSF.
