Introduction:

The first presentations listed on this page are some current slide sets (no notes or annotations) that I have been recently presenting at various major Extension meetings. You will note that many topics are common to each of these slide sets. Unfortunately, I don't have time to break them down by topic. However, you should find that the presentations in the sections that follow are more topical. You can also find recent Agent Update slide sets here. I sincerely hope this helps your Extension efforts, and I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or additional needs for any of your forage programs.

Current Slide Set on the Bermudagrass Stem Maggot

Here is a variation on a slide set that I recently presented at the American Forage and Grassland Council's Annual Meeting. Prior to using this slide set, I encourage you to read the proceedings paper that we submitted at this meeting.

Current Slide Sets from Major Meetings (last 12 months):

Bermudagrass Management:

This presentation (82 slides) provides a rather broad coverage of the management practices recommended for bermudagrass. This presentation also highlights some of the latest research on the subject at the University of Georgia. This presentation has been divided into 3 parts, which should be more appropriate in length for the typical county cattlemen's association meeting or short program (~20-30 minutes in length). Below are the links to the individual presentation files and the three downloadable videos. I also have posted these presentations to the "Lectures on Video."

Bermudagrass Management - Part I (18 min. 2 sec.) Download (mov or wmv | audio)
Bermudagrass Management - Part II (27 min. 47 sec.) Download (mov or wmv | audio)
Bermudagrass Management - Part III (30 min. 39 sec.) Download (mov or wmv | audio)

Primary Forages in Georgia:

This presentation (46 slides) covers many of the primary forage options (grasses and legumes) that can be used in a winter forage program. This presentation also highlights some of the latest research on the subject at the University of Georgia. I also have posted a web video of this presentation being presented on 2 Sept. 2009. More info here.

Legume Management in Georgia

This presentation provides fundamental information about legume use and management in Georgia. This presentation is long (90+ slides), but is such so the Agent can cherry-pick specific parts that they would like to emphasize with your local cattlemen's associations. This also provides some data that would be useful for a news article or newsletter. I have also posted a 4-part web video of how I would present these slides.

Legume Management in Georgia - Part I (11 min. 56 sec.) Download (mov or wmv)
Legume Management in Georgia - Part II (30 min. 43 sec.) Download (mov or wmv)
Legume Management in Georgia - Part III (22 min. 47 sec.) Download (mov or wmv)
Legume Management in Georgia - Part IV (24 min. 8 sec.) Download (mov or wmv)

Fire Ant Control in Pastures and Hayfields

Steve Morgan, UGA Forage Team Member and CEC in Harris Co put this presentation together on controlling fire ants in pastures and hayfields. Steve has put together this presentation slideset in a way that provides a concise (20-30 min.) talk on fire ants.

Hay Sampling

This is a presentation that one of our UGA Forage Team Members, Bobby Smith (CEC Morgan Co.), put together on Hay Sampling. Bobby has also added presentation notes to help you go through the program. This is an excellent presentation for you to use for putting on a Forage talk in your county. The notes may also be helpful to you as you put together a news article or newsletter.

Maximizing Your Grass Potential

Ray Hicks, UGA Forage Team Member and CEC in Screven Co put this presentation together on getting more out of your grass. Ray adapted other Forage presentation slides to provide a concise (20-30 min.) talk on grazing principles. He has also added a few notes to help you emphasize some points as you go through the program.

Forage Management Issues for Horse Pastures

This presentation was recorded on 7-15-08 in Jefferson at the invitation of Mark Shirley, Jackson County Extension Coordinator. Mark asked me to talk about basic forage management issues for horse farms. Click here to launch the web-based version (57 min. 39 sec.) or download the video to your computer (mov or wmv).

Beef Cattle Situation and Outlook - May 2008

Dr. Curt Lacy put together this presentation on the beef cattle situation and near/long-term outlook. Curt has some very useful data in this presentation and it would be important to go through this presentation (or at least parts of it) with your local cattlemen's associations. It will also help provide fodder for a news article or newsletter.

Other Useful Presentations

Prepared by Dr. Dennis Hancock or Members of the UGA Forage Extension Team

Agents: These presentations have, for the most part, not had any notes added to them yet. So, if you haven't seen me deliver these presentations, it may be difficult to follow what was intended. I tend to have pictures or graphs to help tell the story, but it may not be obvious what I'm trying to get across. So, feel free to contact me if you'd like me go through the slides with you by phone prior to making a local presentation.

Livestock Management and Marketing Considerations in Dealing With Drought - This presentation was put together by Dr. Curt Lacy, Extension Livestock Economist. It was presented at the 2008 NW FL Beef Conference.

Pest Management in Pastures and Hayfields - This presentation was developed by Steve Morgan, Harris Co. CEC and UGA Forage Extension Team member. Steve did a great job highlighting the most problematic forage pests and what can be done about them.

These are some of the presentations from the 2007 Regional Forage Conferences that were held in Americus, Baxley, Greensboro, and Rome.

  • FIRST Aid for Drought Stressed Pastures
    • Part I - This presentation uses FIRST as an acronym to focus on Fertility, Insect control, Risk management, Species selection (particularly legumes), and Timing of grazing.
    • Part II - This presentation focuses more on hay production. Specifically, attention is focused on hay storage and feeding losses.
  • Forage Quality and RFQ
    • Basics about forage quality and dry matter intake are introduced and significant time is spent introducing RFQ and the potential of quality-based marketing of hay. This includes several new topics/issues, but is largely based on Dr. Andrae's presentation on RFQ below.
  • Weed Management in Pastures - 2007
    • This is Dr. Tim Murphy's presentation on weed management options in Georgia's Pastures. Note: His presentation refers to the approval of a Section 18 label for Maverick for johnsongrass control in bermudagrass. As soon as we receive the label it will be posted on www.georgiaforages.com.
  • Maximizing Forage Value and Availability
    • Dr. Dennis Chessman, our USDA-NRCS Grazinglands Specialist, presented this outstanding discussion on forage growth/distribution and how to best match animal needs to forage growth. He also did a great job of presenting concepts on rotational stocking.

Winter-2008 Presentation Topic: Winter and Spring Forages

I have put together a slide set and some additional notes for you to review for putting on a Forage talk in your county. The notes may also be helpful to you as you put together a news article or newsletter. Please realize that these notes are not really refined yet, so use them appropriately. (These notes are part of a rough outline for a future Extension bulletin, so stay tuned for that.)
