Griffin Campus Welcomes New FoodPIC Director

Dr. Kirk Kealy with students at his receptionThe University of Georgia Griffin recently hosted a reception to welcome Dr. Kirk Kealey as the new director for the campus’ Food Product Innovation and Commercialization (FoodPIC) Center.  Dr. Kealey came to UGA from PEPSICO Corporation in New York, where he was the research and development director for the global raw material food safety and senior research and development manager for the international new product development. Local and state dignitaries, as well as staff, faculty and students gave Dr. Kealey a warm welcome. Learn more about Dr. Kirk Kealey here.

Mass Casualty Drill

Mass Casulty drillUGA Griffin participated in a mass casualty event with local responders on March 25. At 9:30 a.m. a 911 call was placed regarding a mock tornado disaster on the campus. Emergency vehicles quickly arrived and "victims" were scattered far and wide. Simulated injuries were indicated on each victim with a tag, telling responders what had happened to those needing treatment. The event was coordinated by our Facilities Management Division with local police and emergency responders. See more photos on our Facebook page.

UGA Griffin Retiree Returns as Student

UGA Griffin Retiree-turned-student William SlaughterWilliam Slaughter retired in 2014, after 30 years as a research coordinator on the University of Georgia campus in Griffin. A Georgia Army National Guard Chief Warrant Officer III who's served two tours of duty in Kuwait/Iraq and Kosovo, he operates a choose-and-cut Christmas tree farm in Sunny Side, Georgia.  Now he's decided to take on another venture – that of a UGA Griffin Campus college student. UGA Griffin breaks ground on Food Technology Center

A neat, long pile of soil anchored with red handled shovels standing at attention waited under blue skies and perfect fall temperatures as a crowd gathered to witness the long awaited groundbreaking for the UGA Griffin Food Technology Center on Friday, October 17th.

The event was more a celebration of the culmination of local, university and state efforts to build this world class center a proper home from which to operate. Gov. Nathan Deal, UGA President Jere Morehead, Regent Tommy Hopkins, Rep. David Knight and Griffin Spalding Development Authority Chairman Chuck Copeland all spoke to the gathering, reminding everyone of the importance of the FoodPIC Center to the community, the university, the country and the world.

CAES Assistant Dean Jerry Arkin Retires

Dr. Kris Braman and Dr. Jerry Arkin at his retirement celebrationOn September 30, UGA administration, faculty, staff and students joined CAES Assistant Dean Jerry Arkin as he celebrated his retirement after 27 years of service. He was touted for all of his many accomplishments, including being an integral part of bringing academic programs to the Griffin campus. Dr. Kris Braman, (pictured left) will serve in the interim until a permanent replacement is chosen.  Dr. Braman has been with UGA for more than 25 years, serving as faculty in entomology and as Director of the Center for Urban Agriculture.  A second celebration was held in the evening, allowing community business leaders, elected officials and friends of the campus to express appreciation and well wishes to Dr. Arkin. New UGA peach specialist listening, learning from Georgia growers

UGA peach specialist Dr. Dario ChavezAs the University of Georgia’s new peach specialist, Dario Chavez’s first order of business is to listen. While he’s waiting for the new research orchard on the UGA Griffin Campus to be planted and develop, Chavez is hearing what Georgia peach growers have to say and planning projects to meet their needs. Radio Show: UGA Griffin Campus News

The Griffin Campus hosts a radio show program on Tuesdays from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on WKEU AM 1450.  Each week faculty, staff, and/or students participate in a live interview session where they discuss their research or instructional program.  If you are interested in talking about your research or interested in having a 30/60 second public service announcement aired, please contact Be-Atrice Cunningham in the Assistant Dean’s office.  Please tune in each Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. to WKEU 1450 AM or 88.9 FM to hear the latest news from the UGA Griffin Campus.
